EN - Compiled in the 1580s, the Dow Partbooks are a treasury of music and calligraphic beauty. Copied in black notation on red staves, and interspersed with latin inscriptions, the books contain motets, consort music, and consort songs, by mostly English composers. The texts of the songs ponder the human condition and the life of the mind, while alluding to classical and allegorical stories, and lamenting the death of contemporary figures such as the courtier Sir Philip Sidney. Unique to these books, and recorded together here for the first time, are three English psalms set over the consort In nomine.
DE - Die in den 1580er Jahren zusammengestellten Dow Partbooks sind eine Schatzkammer der Musik und von kalligrafischer Schönheit. In schwarzer Notation auf roten Notenzeilen geschrieben und mit lateinischen Inschriften durchsetzt, enthalten die Bücher Motetten, consort music und consort songs von vorwiegend englischen Komponisten. Die Texte der Lieder befassen sich mit den äusseren Befindlichkeiten und dem inneren Leben des menschlichen Wesens, wobei sie auf klassische und allegorische Geschichten anspielen und den Tod zeitgenössischer Persönlichkeiten, wie den des Höflings Sir Philip Sidney, beklagen. Einzigartig in diesen Büchern sind drei englische Psalmen, die über das Consort In nomine gesetzt sind und hier zum ersten Mal in ihre Gesamtheit aufgenommen wurden.
